Joyce Heywood, 1925 - 2021

Updated: Mar 12, 2021

I have just heard the sad news that Joyce died this morning at the grand old age of 95. She had a stroke a week ago and never regained consciousness. Joyce joined Seavets with her husband Dennis in 1986 and was our second longest serving member. (Peter Blundell holds the honour of having the lowest membership number). Joyce and Dennis were the most stalwart of members, Dennis was on the committee for many years and Chairman in the early 90s. He edited the newsletter in the days when it was photocopied and I remember helping Joyce and Dennis collate the heap of sheets, address envelopes and stick on stamps in the days when membership was around 400 - a mammoth task which they carried out enthusiastically 6 or 7 times a year. After Dennis died, Joyce was persuaded to join the committee too. She was irrepressible, alway good company and endlessly curious about life and the people she met. She carried on windsurfing well into her 80s, and particularly enjoyed the Seavets holidays in Minorca. Karen, Joyce's daughter, tells me that they plan to have a small private funeral and hope to hold a celebration of her life in the summer.
